About us
Vino Locale has been our dream for many years. The idea of specializing in local wines came about after traveling to the wine regions of Italy and France where, when visiting a certain region, local wines are proudly featured in the wine stores and wine bars. Santa Clara county and the Santa Cruz Mountains have a rich history of producing world class wines, yet finding these wines in stores and restaurants can be a challenge.
Wine
The wines we carry are predominantly from Santa Clara County and the Santa Cruz Mountains, with a few from neighboring Alameda and San Mateo. Most of the wines are made from grapes grown on the winery's estate, and most are family owned. We feature a different wine each month with special pricing for our Wine Club Members, “meet the winemaker” tastings and other promotional events.
Food
On a trip to Italy several years ago, we were in Rome and, while visiting Vatican City we noticed a McDonalds in Piazza Spagna and thought to ourselves, “Why in the world would someone eat at McDonalds in Rome where the food is so exceptional?” Ironically, while later in Tuscany, we heard of an organization called Slow Food. After some investigation back home, we learned that Slow Food was founded by Carlos Petrini as a response to the opening of that McDonalds in Rome.
Slow Food U.S.A. is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to supporting and celebrating the food traditions of North America. From the spice of Cajun cooking to the purity of the organic movement; from animal breeds and heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables to handcrafted wine and beer, farmhouse cheeses and other artisanal products; these foods are a part of our cultural identity. They reflect generations of commitment to the land and devotion to the processes that yield the greatest achievements in taste. These foods, and the communities that produce and depend on them, are constantly at risk of succumbing to the effects of the fast life, which manifests itself through the industrialization and standardization of our food supply and degradation of our farmland. By reviving the pleasures of the table, and using our taste buds as our guides, Slow Food U.S.A. believes that our food heritage can be saved.
Slow Food U.S.A. believes that pleasure and quality in everyday life can be achieved by slowing down, respecting the convivial traditions of the table and celebrating the diversity of the earth's bounty.
We are strong supporters of Slow Food and our support is reflected in the food and wine that we carry. We carry as many local products as possible, as well as others that are natural and organic.
Art
Like wine and food, art is a huge part of what makes our region of the world such a great place to live. Thankfully, there are hundreds of talented artists here that love to share their creations. Each month, we will feature the work of a local artist, including a “meet the artist” event that will, of course, include wine and food. What could be better?
